Bryan, the IIsi was notorious for it's inconsistent sound quality or lack of sound for that matter. The best way to fix it was to ignore the built-in speaker and just use external ones. I bought a cheap pair ($10) for mine, plugged it into the head phone jacks on the back and the sound was fine

Did you check the settings on the back of the CD-ROM? Make sure the ID # is set to say "4". I believe you can't use 1 or 7. Check the website of the manufacturer and see if you can get the latest version of the driver for the CD-ROM. I'm using an 8X LaCie CD-ROM and I was able to d/l the lates
