Thanks to all of you for your input thus far on my noisey Seagate drives.
From what you all have said, my conclusion is that they are likely usable,
but that the noise factor is inherent with this particular model and is
exaggerated further by putting two such drives in a very small enclosure.
How can I check?
Did you format it as HFS+?

So, OS versions is not the problem, but Silverlining might be or something
to do with format options not directly related to OS?

Look guys, I'm coming from the ugly Windows/DOS world. I don't understand
the need for drivers to install a hard drive whatsoever except for that
brief and ugly period in our own history when there was such a thing as
EIDE which I tried to avoid like the plague. :)
So, what I'm telling you is
Gregg:
Thanks so much for this note. Many have chimed in with potentially useful
information about how to solve my immediate problem, but here you have
educated me on the ways of Macdom.
The Mac uses disk drivers because the ROM in the
Mac doesn't know how to talk directly to a whole

Hi folks:
Does anyone have experience with Seagate ST15150N drives? Is it normal for
them to be incredibly noisy in a whiney sort of way? I'm not complaining
because these came in a two-drive SCSI enclosure that I thought to contain
no working drives whatsoever. But these two drives both seem to
Hi folks:
I've got a problem that is kind of mystifying me: I've got an SE/30 I've
been working on to be my *very personal* computer. I was cruising along
trying to get it to network with 6.08 and control always comes up with an
error when trying to switch from localtalk to ethertalk.
After
I'm chipping away at setting up my vintage Mac collection. I put the SE/30
on hold for a bit because I'm beginning to think the Ethernet card in it
isn't working. But I did get that backup I was after via serial ports.
Anyway, now I'm working on an LC and a IIci and they are both coming
together
OK, turning off extensions really didn't do much because when I go into
MacTCP, all the values are still protected. However, I'm not now even
given the opportunity to enter the elusive master password were I to know
it. What next?

William:
Wiping the drive is an option and really, it's a matter of routine with me.
But I'd hoped to be able to get a backup first in hopes of rescuing some of
the software presently on the disk. Thus the need for networkability -- to
do the backup before starting over.

I see I overlooked that Pickle. Probably because I don't know how to do it.
Explain?

OK Pickle:
I found a file named Timbuktu Pro Preferences and instead of trashing it,
I just moved it to my desktop for fear of screwing something up. Is that
adequate?

OK, it seems to have helped a little in that Timbuktu Pro now asks me to set
up new preferences including a new master password! (Yay!) However, in
MacTCP, all the options are still locked. I'm wanting to set these so that
the IP is assigned by DHCP built into the router.

Hello:
Yesterday I was given an SE/30 that seems to be in very good condition. As
it is, it has some useful software on it and is running and booting system
7.1 just fine.
The problem is when it comes to networking. It has something called
Timbuktu Pro, version 2.0 on it that seems to intercept
Pickle:
What happens when you boot with extensions off and toss out the Timbuktu
prefs?
That's one of those secret Mac key combination things right? In other
words, I don't know how to even try what you are asking of me. (Recent
convert here...)

I've braved CP/M, Dos, Netware, Windows and now, Linux, all the while being
told that Macs were the user friendly alternative. So, when my newly
acquired 7200/75's hard drive went south, I didn't hesitate for a moment
before diving in to swap it out for a new one myself. How hard could it
Oops, I apologize: Is a 7200 not vintage enough yet? Or is OS 8.1 too new?

Yes, Hard disk tool kit looks to be the sort of thing I'm needing, but... Is
there a freeward equivalent out there?

OK, sorry Al. I'll redirect this inquiry and make sure what I post here in
the future is non-PCI Powermac related.
