I'm not saying 8.1 will not RUN on the Performa 575, I'm saying it's a bit
heavy for the hard disk, and it'll run slowly. That is why I RECOMMEND 7.1 or
lower.

Huh??? What has the 575 to do with 68020 or lower???
If 8.1 is a bit heavy for the original 575 hard disk, put in a
bigger and faster one. Of course 7.1 is always faster...

Oh, sorry, thought the Performa 575 had a 68020 for some reason. Yes, 8.1
will run fine ... but 7.1 will always be faster on this kind of machine. I
really recommend 8.1 for an '040 machine.

Using system picker or system switcher you can just install 2

My personal experience with mac os 8 on the 68040 is that it was not
very stable. I did like it on the ppc macs though... For the ppc's it

Thanks to response from Michael J. Flaherty and some
comments on 601.
In fact, I have:
SE/30 030/50MHz/128MB
Mystic 040/FPU/43MHz/132MB
Mystic 601/120MHz/36MB (I found it could run even I
removed the 040)
PPC/CC 6500 (under construction)
I think system 7.1 is the best choice for SE/30.

This would be better tackle on Quadlist, since the 575 has an '040
processor, but I'd
7.5.3 or 7.5.5 is your best bet. It provides new features and functionality and
support for more new software. 8.1 provides more, but it may be laggy on this machine.
Good luck,

Nope. It's not possible. The LC575 shipped with 7.5.something or other and
can't use anything less. The best thing you can do is install 7.5.5 from
Apple's site, or buy a copy of 7.6.1. I think Jag's House on the swap list
has several copies for fairly cheap.

Why go higher than 7.1? It will do everything 7.5.x, 7.6.x, or 8.1 will do
without the RAM
