If you get the Voiceover clicks on your iPhone but hear no voice it means you have accidently muted Voiceover. This is different from completely unloading Voiceover with a triple click of the home button, Voiceover is still running, but speech is turned off. The gesture to toggle speech on/off

Yes. I would recommend reading and writing in six-dot braille, uncontracted, first, especially for languages like German and Spanish, which do have contractions like English braille. That way, you can learn which braille symbols are accents and such. You can also use speech to help with this

Along with insuring that Do Not Disturb is off, and making sure the mute switch is not on, in the sound settings, find the sound volume and make sure it is loud enough and that the button just after the volume is set to Not Change with buttons. If none of that works, try powering off and back
