I have had some very strange things happen today when using Airplay.
I have the iPhone 5S with iOS 8 and Alex as the default voice.
I had music playing over my stereo via airplay.
I decided to plug in my ear buds to check Email without disturbing my wife.

I don't have iOS 8, so of course, I can't try your bug. But out of curiosity,
have you tried selecting a different high-quality voice if you have one, and
seeing if this is an airplay thing or and Alex thing perhaps?
