I too have ripped a bunch of music over the years; however I'm not having the
same problems. The status after the song says cloud download. After tapping
download all button, the status to the right of the song says 0%, 10% etc. I
have an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1

monitoring your storage under settings/general/usage, or alternatively
