I used Around Me recently. It worked, but it sure didn't find much in the area
where I was. I don't recall if it has recently been updated. I used the whereto
app with much better luck.

Bottom left is a globe icon which is a search. Bottom right afaik is
settings and it says so, Favourites is around there too, though seems not
to appear all the time. I'm sure I had some, but the list is empty now.
Maybe it's just in a mood when I declined to rate it.

Yes, Around Me works in New Zealand and Australia as well.
Another similar app to consider is Where To. Where To accesses bus stop
locations in cities that support it, such as Wellington, NZ. Also, Where To has
a nifty feature that gives the direction and distance to the POI you selected.
