Does GPS work if the phone is in Airplane mode?

Quite often, I am told that I'm 2 or 3 doors away from where I actually am.
It's not just the iphone that's given me these slightly off results either.
I've accepted it as inherent inaccuracy in GPS. Mind you, I have sometimes

It's true that most devices will only give you about 15 meters of
accuracy, but this isn't because the earth and satellites are in motion.
This has to do with time keeping, transmission/reception speeds
allowed it.

GPS accuracy varies depending on how clear a view of the sky you have. So if
you're in a vehicle, you can often improve accuracy by putting your device near
a window. On the street, there's not much you can do. The weather can affect
accuracy, for instance. So maybe you'll get a better
to judge
anything like that.
