Haven't really tried 8-dot much but there's certainly a similar lag between

Hi.
I would say that 20 cells is better than 14, but maybe I am wrong, maybe 14
cells are enough? I am in doubt.
I have used 8 dots braille for many years now, but you can write the same in 6
dots braille maybe sometimes with 2 commands. As I see it the difference on 6

I haven’t seen Vario ultra but reading about it I think I remember that Vario
Ultra has 20 cells and not 14 so admittedly allows you more text and less
panning but it is very expensive - over £2000 in Britain.

Just want to write a correction: Smart Beetle does have 8 keys so that you can
write computer braille. The bluetooth keyboard emulation I think has more to
do with using it with a mac computer where you can simulate control keys but I
don’t understand this well yet.

Hi Jim
Let me say that I own neither of the two, and have only read about both.
So far, I can think of two major differences.

The vario ultra has eight. Soo if you want to regularly write computer

To flick up or down on an iPhone with one finger using a Braille display, you
press space with dot 3 to flick up and space with dot 6 to flick down,
respectively. Space with dots 1-4-56 will scroll down the screen, and space
with dots 3-4-5-6 will scroll up the screen.
Thanks,

This is very helpful. Thank you very much. Also, are you aware of any
podcasts / training materials on the use of refreshable Braille display with
iOS devices? I'm also puzzled about this feature of Smart Beetle being able to

You have to keep the device unlocked for all braille displays.
When you lock the device, the screen blanks out, so sighted people can't read
on their device when locked either.
