You only have room for so much food, and once you reach that limit, you won't accumulate any more. Your food status is at the top of the screen. You can get to it with a two finger sweep up followed by two swipes right. It'll tell you how much food you currently have and how much food capacity

Your food stocks will be replenished over time. If you run out of food adventuring or training your heroes then just wait a bit and you'll have more food to go adventuring and do some more training. It'll take longer to play the game without esper, but you can do it. I have fun playing the game
