I think you need a sighted person there who can see what you are doing wrong.
For that to work, though, you would need to temporarily turn off the screen
curtain and turn up the brightness.

Unless you had turned the phone around so the back was facing you, you were
using the front facing camera. Apparently screen brightness does interfere with
that one. I, like others, assumed you were using the back camera for something
like short text, etc.

I tried the "person" setting. When my brightness was at 0, it would
say "no people detected" but when I put it at 100 it described my
face.

I too, have my screen brightness set low. I haven't had any problems when using
the app, except when there isn't enough light in the room where Im trying to
take a photo & have it recognized.

I tried it with the brightness set to 0, then 100 as well as then turning on
the screen curtain.
I got pretty much the same results in all cases. I tried to keep my hand in the
same position, but it is impossible to be absolutely exact
Does anybody know if Seeing AI'S results are affected by the level of
screen brightness? I like to keep mine at 0, but I've noticed the
camera seems to work much better when I turn it up high.
