Let me say that I own neither of the two, and have only read about both.
So far, I can think of two major differences.
1.: The smart beetle has six dot buttons that can be used for writing.
The vario ultra has eight. Soo if you want to regularly write computer
braille, the vario might be
Just want to write a correction: Smart Beetle does have 8 keys so that you can
write computer braille. The bluetooth keyboard emulation I think has more to
do with using it with a mac computer where you can simulate control keys but I
don’t understand this well yet.

Ultra has 20 cells and not 14 so admittedly allows you more text and less
panning but it is very expensive - over £2000 in Britain.
