Are you set to standard typing?
I place one finger on the letter I need to type and use a finger on my other
hand to do the tapping.

letters, are you sure touch typing is not enabled?
You should make sure you have standard typing selected before using the split
tap.

There are 'two sections, Software keyboards and hardware. My guess is the
Software keyboard is set to none.
You want, at least characters selected.
The hardware keyboard is for external keyboards, bluetooth, etc.
