I am a new user. I tried to connect to a user that had
VNC listening on their side with the IP address that
pops up when they move the mouse over the VNC icon in
the system tray. I could not connect.
Does it make a difference if the receiving home system
is using a broadband connection with a rout

I might have suspected a compilation issue, but what I forgot to mention is
that VNC worked soon after I copied the new executables and DLLs from the
Release directory into the VNC4 directory and ran vncviewer. But the next
time I ran it I got the SelectObject error.

I am trying to test the functionality of realVNC outside of a browsing

I have trouble understanding where to execute the command written in the

Can anyone help???

Ok. Created other users in the system with useradd/passwd
Edited the vncserver file in /etc/sysconfig to look something like this:
VNCSERVERS="1:jdimpson 2:phred 3:sysadmin"
Then:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/vncserver restart
It shut down my root session & daemon never came back up. I regret doing this

Hello,
While reading an article at http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5499
It refers to starting the VNC server at boot up, and editing the passwd file.
However, if the vncserver has a password assigned already, this means the passwd file
in the /root/.vnc is being used?

The Unix Xvnc has a command line switch for it. IIRC you have to

I'd like to know how to specify a HTTP port not different by 100 than the

What is VNC reflector? Where did you get it? It doesn't seem to be a product
of RealVNC:
http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html
Maybe you could get better help from the reflector's own author/programmer.

Thanks for the reply. First of all: yes. As to the situation, it is
the second. You are correct that I can check to see whether the service
is running; however, this doesn't mean that it is necessary in use.
Actually, the answer to the first situation seems to be appropriate:

OH! For you, "active" actually meant "connected", right? I thought it meant
if the server is simply running or not.
The first situation can't help you. You can't use telnet to check if a
connection is established. AFAIK, any IP application, thus in particular VNC server,

I think your last sentence actually is "... the VNC session is active?"
The answer to your question depends on where you're. Are you in one PC and
want to determine if VNC is active in another? Or you're in one PC and want to know
if VNC is active in that SAME PC?

I made a mistake. I actually wanted to say stretched desktop instead of
extended desktop. It can be specified in display properties, of course. But not all
video adapter support stretched desktop.

To know the public IP address, you could go to this URL which, in the same
time, could help you check if your config is correct.

activate screen-saver made by Microsoft and maybe turn off monitor after a certain

"native viewer" is opposite to Java viewer. For ex, vncviewer.exe is the
native viewer for Windows platforms, while vncviewer is that for Unix.
Besides that Java viewer needs JVM to run, it also needs two ports (usually
5800 & 5900): one to get this viewer through HTTP and one f
In command prompt window, you type in
net stop winvnc
and
net start winvnc
to stop and start VNC server service. You could put them in two batch files so that
you just need to double click to execute the commands.
