1) Find out your PC's (the one you want to VNC into) MAC address.
2) Login to your router.
3) Configure your router to always give the same internal ip (192.168.x.y) to the PC.
4) Configure your router to forward traffic into port 12345 (whatever number you
choose) to the IP you configured in (3).
Hi folks,
I run a home office, 3 pcs with static LAN addresses (192.168.0.2 ..3...4)
connected to internet and each other via a Netgear router.
I have installed a VNC server (as a service) on the main machine, the "file
server", at 192.168.0.2 (static).
Netgear router of course has a firewall.
I have a user who needs to connect to a VNC viewer. We are behind an
ISA firewall, and I have opened port 5500 outbound. I am closer to
connecting, but still not getting there. I get the Attempting to
Connect to host, but an error pops up indicating "unable to connect to

Greetings,
I am using VNC V.4 on Windows 2000 professional.
It must be registered as a service. Then if you are using a firewall and or
a router the ports have to be forwarded.
I had some problems until I understood just what VNC was doing and what it
needed. I have been using it in various modes
I read your initial description more carefully this time. Your linksys router is

Hello -
I am new to VNC and networking in general. I apologize if I am asking
"simple" questions, but they are mine and I do need to know.

Hi,
Does VNC V.4 server support on Windows 2000

The service started fine, but I can't VNC from another
computer to it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Jaakko,
Ignore the registry-related lines.
Does your Windows 95 system have Winsock 2.0 installed, or only Winsock 1.1?

Jaakko,
Connect Refused means that the remote computer is not running anything that
is accepting VNC connections on the specified port number - this will be
because the server is not listening.
Try running the server in application mode, using:

Jaako,
There is a tray icon update bug in the current release of VNC 4.0 - are you
sure your server is not actually listening?

I dont believe there is anything wrong with SSL, its just that ssh can
provide at least an equal level of security, and has been used to
tunnel VNC by a lot of people.
I was recommending it as you will find much more documentation on
using VNC with SSH, than with SSL.

On *Your* router forward 5500.
On *their* computer install vnc, (set up as service?)
On *Your* computer run a "Listening VNC Viewer"
On *their* computer make sure VNC Server is running,
Right-Click on tray icon and select "Add Client",
Have them type in *Your* public IP/Domain.

Ok now I get it!
Since normally I don't have any troubles with fonst on my X I never gave it the time
to understand the process of fonts.
So if I'm getting this right, the issue is the following:
- Xvnc does not support ALL fonts
- You ither use fontpaths or fontservers or boths
