OK . So I should be able to use an office application or console no
problem, but I cannot view the xscreensaver running on vnc server
etc.. thats what u are saying.

VNC works with the in-memory display buffer, before it gets passed to
the graphics card
RealVNC is pleased to announce the release of VNC Free Edition 4.1.1.
VNC Free Edition 4.1.x is a major overhaul of the previous VNC 4.0
release, benefitting from the significant stability and performance
improvements made in the development of VNC Enterprise Edition
Theo,
We'll be replacing the HP-UX files shortly, because they currently only work
on HP-UX 11.00 and require libstdc++ - our new binaries work on more
versions of HP-UX and won't require extra libraries beyond what's already on
the system.
What length is the .depot file you've downloaded?
Ryan,
That behaviour is normally associated with Fast User Switching or Remote
Desktop having been used on the machine that is running VNC Server. VNC
4.1.1 includes a workaround for this problem, and we're working on a full
fix.
Cheers,
Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

Ha! That explains why I never see the screensaver on my headless
machines. I always thought they just woke up...like they would whenever
I moved the mouse on my main machine.
Learned something new today.
Thanks,

Rich,
I'd take this thread with a pinch of salt. Robin is talking about how the
VNC Server works, and is unfortunately mistaken, while Gobbledegeek is
seemingly talking about the VNC module for XFree86, or about Xvnc.
If your machine is headless, how would you be able to see the screensaver,
Oh yes, your right of course. (some people are like that...right all the
time8-}
I do understand...now...maybe...whatever...it works just fine for my
small home network, which is what counts in the end...
Thanks for the thread-straightening...and it's really hard to
straighten threads...when
Hey guys,

You can't find it because it's not there.
Theo,
It sounds like your downloaded copy is corrupt in some way. The checksum
(with cksum) of the file should be 1797334438.
The depot file isn't compressed, otherwise it would be about 2.5Mb in size,
rather than almost 7Mb...
I'm not sure whether or not the HP aC++ runtime libraries will
I have several Windows XP Pro SP2 machines loaded with VNC 4.1.1 Free. it
seems that when I go to connection info they say the protocol is 3.8, is
this correct?

Another thing I just don't get, is on a 100mbit, full duplex lan, 3.3.7

Paul,
VNC 3.3.7 had a special hack in it to prioritise copy operations,
specifically so that window dragging operations would seem faster. VNC 4.x
doesn't currently have this hack, so window dragging may appear slower.

I believe john is correct. I traced back several programs that come
through as a black box (the video window of powerDVD is but one) and it
seems they all use the GPU of the video card to do that potion of the
display rendering.
