Unfortunately, VNC does not work well with XP. You will need to disable
Fast User Switching if you want to use VNC reliably. It's a shame
though, as that is one of the best features of XP...

Hi averybody,
I have a problem with the java vnc client 4.1. I have
compilled the source and I have maked tha jar file and
every thing is ok but the color depth. I could not
have true color on the viewer.
Is this a limitation of the java viewer?
Is there workaround or a fix for that?

Scott,
You should still find that you can re-enable the firewall and set VNC server
as an exception - I'd be interested to hear whether that then works (with or
without a reboot). It may be that Windows firewall is getting confused by
the order in which it and VNC server start up - if VNC server
Mike,
No, "Add New Client" is used to connect out from a server to a listening
viewer. This is termed a "reverse" connection, since it is more normal to
connect from viewer to server, and is mainly used where firewalls prevent
viewer to server connections.

Thanks!
I forgot the magic of the Windows Reboot. After turning off the Windows
Firewall and REBOOTING, everything is working okay. I can now to connect
to any of these machines without a problem. Funny how it worked with the
firewall on until MS came out with some new security patches.

It's a feature that allows a "reverse" connection -- i.e. the server can add
a listening client, however the client machine has to be listening.

What does the "Add New Client" feature mean? Do I need to do something there in
order to connect from the viewer?

Scott,
Can you check the Application Event Log on the problem server machine, to
determine whether connections are even being received by VNC Server?
If the computers in question are on a LAN, protected by a NAT firewall, then
you probably don't want to leave a firewall enabled on the computers

This is not true of any recent versions of VNC.

Hi,
I have a couple of machines that are set to auto-update from MS. They
now have the latest and greatest MS security patches for XP SP2 on them.
However, I can no longer connect to these machines using RealVNC 4.1.1.
I have read about putting VNC viewer/server into the exceptions list on

I think Ethan was looking for a feature that can be found in the RDP client,
where you can select the screen size.
But I understand that such feature cannot be implemented in VNC, at least
not now.

Ethan,
VNC Viewer does not have "screen resolution choices", which is why I don't
understand what you mean. The size of the desktop is determined purely by
the display settings as configured at the server, not by the VNC Viewer.

Hey Wez,
hmmm, I'm not sure how else to say this. The screen resolution choices
from the viewer software are based on the available option of the graphics
card from the computer running the server. However, the perfect screen
resolution setting for the display card from the viewer computer is

Mike,
Check the Application Event Log on the computer that is running VNC Server -
it should contain messages of the form "Connections: closed", with a
description of the reason for closing the connection.
