screen, that's the problem. There is a script (on RedHat/Fedora) in ~/.vnc
called "xstartup" which reads:

What you are seeing is a standard X desktop running an Xterm and the twm
window manager - this is what the "vncserver" command runs after having
created a dedicated VNC X server for you.
