Toyota announced that the Prius will now include a gadget to make
some noise at low speed to alert pedestrians to the presence of the
car. The gadget makes a noise "unlike a motor" more futuristic,
apparently. The sound level is 55 dB. It cuts out at speeds above 25
kph. That's reasonable.

and more like the electric motor. That is annoying whine like a giant
mosquito. I guess it is better than playing a cell-phone ring tone or

When riding a bicycle on a path shared by pedestrians, it is usually
considered good form to alert the walker with "on your right", "on your
left" or equivalent, which is a bit saner than indiscriminant "noise," which
presumably needs to be much louder in order to achieve the proper attention
level
