I guess Gateway feels us mere mortals aren't competent enough to fix our
own computers. I can't get the cover off to save my life. Guess I have
to take it to one of their repair centers so they can blow out the dust.
:-/
Maybe something else caused the x server problem?

I run Mandrake 9.0. The log file is the same as Debian. I checked it and
there are no error lines at all. There were a few warnings (WW) scattered
through it, but no errors.

Katie, what distro are you running by chance? On Debian
It doesn't appear to be CPU overheating. Here's what happens:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] katie]$startx
info scrolls by really fast
screen blinks to black, then blinks back
info pops up with version release date blah, blah, default settings
using vt 7
waiting for x server to shut down
[EMAIL
. I'm pretty sure
it's in the search path.
Can someone give me a step by step procedure for turning this into a shell
script, please.
Thanks
Katie
From Ken Bloom:
I suggest doing this by using the following command, replacing login and
password with your own login and password:
echo qy | lynx

Well, show us what you've got.
#!bin/bash
echo qy | lynx https://secureweb.ucdavis.edu:443/cgi-auth/sendback?;;
http://email.ucdavis.edu/news/news-succeed.html;;
-force_secure
/katie/bin/runtin: line 3: qy: command not found
and I'm back to the command line. How do I fix this?

#!bin/bash
In addition to Bill's remarks below, this line needs to be
#!/bin/bash
That is, an absolute path (starts with slash) rather than
is katie. I don't know how to find ~katie/.bashr. When I
put it at the command line I got /home/katie/.bashrc not a directory.

Is there any way to set this up so I don't have to do the
$ export NNTPSERVER=news.ucdavis.edu everytime I go to use tin?
From: Bill Kendrick [EMAIL
added the line
NNTPSERVER=news.ucdavis.edu at the end of the other stuff.

I don't have an /etc/news/server file. I tried to create one, but it
didn't work. Most likely I did it wrong. How would I create
/etc/news/server?
I don't know how to find ~katie/.bashr. When I
put
installed without a hitch, so now I can use
pico.
Thanks!

not yet installed so i've gotten in the
habit of:
rpm -Uvh package
Yeah, this could be the problem. When I downloaded, KPackage took over
and I was really just a monkey pressing whatever buttons it gave me. I'm
thinking I better try the above method from now on.
Thanks!

Only two
. I
brought up a terminal to try it. It didn't work.
Here's what happened:
1. [...katie]$tin
2. this message flashed at the bottom of the screen
really quickly:
copyright...
can't open /var/lib/news/active
try tin -r to read news via NNTP
3. [...katie]$
I tried the tin -r, got a cannot connect
]
$ export NNTPSERVER=news.ucdavis.edu
$ tin -r
Yay!!! It worked! I've got tin working now. Woohoo!
Thanks guys!
