Thanks to all those who replied to me on this problem. The third suggested fix by 'Jude' worked a treat! For your information..a leftover desktop ,sea folder from a partial download could not be trashed. Jude's solution was to reboot in OS9 and 'find' the folder and trash it. Thanks agai

For those who are feeling a bit adventurous the firmware updates from worked for me. I'd follow the directions pretty carefully, eg.restarting without extensions etc.. and there was a very long wait at the end where it looked like the trusty imac had frozen...
