Most youtube videos you now need to hold down the option key when you click on
the large file link in Activity viewer. (as otherwise it does what you said and
plays in another window).

Craig possibly is correct, but try starting MBA in Safe Mode.
Hold the Shift key down between the startup sound and the logo with pinwheel.
It will be a slower startup with a progress bar.
If that works, restart as normal.
