MacBook won't boot up

My 12 yo's MacBook has refused to boot up after shutting down in the normal way a few nights ago. I am remote so trying to resolve this remotely from him is a bit challenging. I did a quick google and it suggested to try boot up in Safe mode. He tried this but screen stays on the grey screen

Hi Ronni Well I left the Mac and iPad alone for more than 24 hours - both turned on - no change on the iPad, the 7 songs still ghosted out. I will leave for the moment, I would imagine that my fiddling around has probably interfered with some of the settings Daniel had put in place last year,
