I understand very well being caught up in urgent work, it's an occupational
hazard for many of us ;-)
Good to hear you were able to delete all the temp files, I was certain they
would be causing problems in iTunes.

So sorry for my rudeness on not replying until now - have been caught up with
urgent work.
I did delete the temp files and since I have perhaps added 5 files into iTunes
- so far so good !! I had almost a gb of temp files.
Hopefully my iTunes will run okay again.
