If you want to avoid similar problems in the future you should be able to set
photos to NOT open automatically when you plug in something that would
otherwise trigger it (card/camera/phone/ipad).
I remember I did this back when I used to plug my iphone into my iMac to sync
music

Problem solved I had an SD card with photos on removed left until today no
more automatic photos popping up.

If Mail is definitely searching the correct Mailbox (as you can set it to
search just one folder, just the Inbox, or “all folders”) then it could be an
issue with the Spotlight search for it.
You can set it to “stop” searching in Spotlight, then after a few minutes
“Removing” it again
