Yes, exactly what I have to do. I would mention, I also have an iMac running
on Mojave and do not have this problem. Very odd.
Probably nothing to do with it, but the problematic Mac uses POP email, whereas
the iMac uses iMAP.

send my attachments in different emails! In desperation I have just installed
Outlook and will give it a try, reluctantly, and if it behaves then so be it!

Can’t help you, but thought I would mention that my Mac O/S Catalina - mail
often quits on me if for instance I am forwarding an email with a number of
attachments. I have to make fresh emails and only attach say two attachments
in order to prevent mail from quitting.
