Yep, Bigpond mail settings for incoming & outgoing mail server:
mail.bigpond.com for all customers has been this for a long time.
That is why I asked the question … and asked you to check Connection Doctor ;-)

Problem sorted! Thank you Ronni for the Connection Doctor idea, which
showed a red light.
Luckily it wasn't as complicated in the end as keychains, incoming
ports or SSL, 5 minute mail retrievals or any advanced settings.
