I closed the computer down yesterday, and just restarted it this afternoon.
Tried TextEdit and checked to see if it would replace all, and it does. So,
mysterious episode is over, and still mysterious.

Hi Pat,
Mavericks hides the user Library folder (that is, ~/Library) by default, just
as Lion and Mountain Lion did.
You can open it easily enough by holding down Option while choosing Library
from the Finder’s Go menu, but if you find yourself doing this frequently, that
can get to be a hassl

Thanks for your reply. However, I did look there for it, and looked again just
now, but it just doesn’t seem to be there. I looked in the Library and looked
for Users/pat/Library, but I don’t see that either.
Running Mavericks, 10.9.2.
