Thanks to everyone for their help with the 'loud fan' issue. It looks
like Zapping the P-Ram worked, as no more screaming fan!

Yep, still haven't met a computer that wont shut down if I keep
holding the power button in for 5 or so seconds. Mac or PC.
I'm also kind of impressed by the odd set of conditions that power
resets and SMC resets, as described by Ronni here, will resolve if not
cure when used.

2. Remove the power cord from the back of the iMac, wait 15 seconds and plug it
back in.
3. Startup the iMac

Someone in WAMUG gave me the answer to the loud fan problem a while ago and it
works. As soon as you press the start button, if the fan is loud switch off at
the power point and then start again. I don't know why it works. Try it.
