Actually, Verizon's network is CDMA so you can't use an iPhone (which
is GSM) on that network (apart from being a totally incompatible
standard, CDMA does not use SIM cards).
Assuming you mean an iPhone 2G, I don't think you can buy them
anymore. They are not listed on the USA Apple Store. Perhaps your
friend is looking perchance to purchase one secondhand?

Greetings! ATT sells an unlocked i Phone BUT you have to subscribe to an
ATT phone plan. Best deal is to buy an unlocked one from Graig at Max Style
and take it with him to the states. Then buy a prepaid sim from Verizon and
use it in the states.
