well, it always applies on top of the hardware hysteresis. having said that, if
the hw hysteresis exceeds the 0.5mm, it should never trigger, so the hysteresis
applied should always be the maximum of 0.5mm

the fingers still wobbling that we had to re-instate it. It was largely
