Being a life long resident of NC, I always thought that calling someone "Old
Man" such and such meant that he was the elder in a line of men with the
same name, i.e. Sr, Jr, the third, etc.

It was looking at Gunsmoke a few days ago and 3 episodes was like watching
Mayberry!
First episode had Jack Albertson.
Second had James Best, who gave his life to save Matt and Ron Howard from
the Indians.
Third was a mean old judge played by Rance Howard. Guess Mayberry was a good

Actually I need to correct my previous post about the term "Old Man". I
believe the correct reference was standing in a stag line with Old MISTER
Perkins rather than Old Man Perkins. Crazy...guess I wasn't thinking.
