The other actor I had in mind was Frances Bavier, who was born in New York City
in 1902. Aunt Bee says New York City several times in Those Gossipin' Men,
when she plants the idea in Andy's mind that the shoe salesman may not be all
that he seems.

Don Knotts was indeed from Morgantown, WV but Barney never mentions Morgantown.
Aunt Bee does, though, in Banjo-Playing Deputy. Jerry tells the Taylors that he
was born and raised there.
I don't recall Emmett or anyone else ever mentioning Mt. Airy, however Mt.
Airy newspapers can be seen in
In one of the color episodes, Goober asked Andy if he wanted to go to the
tractor show in Jasper. George Lindsay grew up in Jasper, AL (which would have
been a long drive from Mayberry, NC).
Keith in Nebraska (a really long drive from Mayberry NC)
Did Barney mention Morgantown, WV? Seems like maybe he did.

I grew up in a small town in the south..South Dakota, that is. With a noon
whistle, 6 p.m. whistle, and 10 p.m. whistle. None of the children wore a
watch..didn't have to (didn't carry a cell phone either).
The playground next to the school was a place for everyone to play. No

I had a very emotionally packed day this Saturday as I made a return trip
to my hometown to give a Mayberry presentation at a Lions Club 50 year
anniversary celebration. Day started by having lunch with good friends
from high school and then spending several hours with them. Then we were

This morning while recouping from a bad cold I watched a number of color
episodes of TAGS. I especially re-enjoyed A Singer in Town . Keevey's
final rendition of My Hometown gets to me every time. So I decided to
write a second verse. No way does it compare to the lyrics written by Aunt
Bee
I just received the email below, and thought you'd all be interested.

Ken-reading your telling of your events portraying Barney and doing the
parades with the squad car has become one of the highlights of my day. Having a
dark and sordid past (I was in a band in the sixties and we did well in
Wisconsin), I have been to nearly every town you mention. If I

Anyone else remember the following?

I currently live in the small town where I grew up. I left for college, which
was about two hours away, so it wasn't hard to visit home on the weekends.
Also, for several years I lived in another small town, but that was only 30
min. away. So I feel like I never really left home. And
I have lived in the same area for my entire life and have loved it. I did live
45 minutes away when I went to Virginia Tech but I could get home anytime I
needed to. I have 4 very close friends from elementary and high school who
stayed in the area and we are still very close today. My sife

is not a small town, I don't think of it as my hometown. I do have a vacation
home in Henderson, NV, right by Las Vegas, where we might retire to, but would
like to keep a little place in Newport Beach to visit. Sorry this e-mail is so
long--I will try to keep
It makes me wonder about our Digest Family. How many of you continue to live

Ken: As you know from our emails, I not only live in my hometown but recently
moved back into the house I grew up in to take care of my ailing mother. I have

Our family visited at Don Knotts hometown celebration last Saturday in
Morgantown WV. Went to hear Don's daughter, Karen, perform her Tied Up In

Anyone who will be able to attend the 'Don Knotts Hometown Celebration', (in

I was driving past our local gas station last nite and saw a man (nobody I

I'm planning my vacation for this August, and I'm heading into Mississippi
(Tunica and Tupelo) and into Alabama (mainly to take my mom on the Hank

there a museum there devoted to Jim/Gomer? What can folks
I thought you all might want to know, if you don't already, that Don Knotts'
hometown, Morgantown, WV, is raising money to erect a statue of Don. This
statue has his family's blessings. Contributions for the statue should be
sent to the Greater Morgantown Community Trust, P.O. Box 409
I would like to make a comment on Kenneth Anderson's moving account of his
