Instead of pasting it directly into Fireworks, try saving it as a
psd. That should preserve transparency. If not save as png with
alpha transparency.

to force a download of a Word file, but I need to also force a download of
an image file that the Word file

page, it has no surrounding colour (I think it's called isolated). But

I you only want to grab a single layer, it's really easy. On a PC hold down
the Ctrl key and with the arrow or "Move" tool, click on the specific layer
you want in the layers dropdown menu. (
