Hi Steve,
Problem is that, no matter how I set up the hd (as
master, slave, CS, or single) I can't get the pc to
find the new hd in Setup, and it won't launch from
the cdrom.
Both NT4 and Win2k will boot from CD, but you may need to change the boot
order in the CMOS setup (if the PC is set
Hi Jon,
I have tried every boot sequence setting that the computer has, with no
luck. Funny thing is that if I hook up the old hd, and set the computer to
boot from a first, it will. If I then disconnect the old hd and hook up
the new hd, nothing happens...it won't try to boot from a, and can't
There is no OS installed; only an empty hd. I can't even get the setup to
find the hd, and it won't boot from the cd. I even tried simply connecting
the cd and disconnecting the hd, and the cd didn't boot.
Make any sense?
NT will not see a drive larger than 4gig (2gig if you want to be extra

What about installing an OS on the old hd and then trying to add the new one
as a slave once everything's up and running?
If you can, I'd try your new hd in another machine asap.
Cheers
Hi Andrew,
Win 2k need a pentium 400 so you can't install
that on the machine either.
It might not be recommended by Microsoft, but you can certainly install it -
I have a 200, a 233 and a 300 which all have Win2k. All are 128mb and have
been happily running for the last couple of years. I

Same issue. Go to dos and use fdisk to create the smaller partition. NT
setup cannot see the large drive and therefore will not attempt to load the
setup files on a hd which doesn't exist for it.

I'll give it a go, although I still don't understand.
The part I don't get is that I can't get the computer to recognize the drive
BEFORE trying to install NT...
thanks

Sure you can; I ran Win 2k Server on a Pentium 200. It should work just fine
on his PIII; although it will be slow.

More than likely - I think both NT4 and Win2k will format the drive for a
new installation (you've tried the repair installation option for the
old
HD in Windows setup, right?)
1.) Don't install NT 4.0, there is no sense in runnig it. It's just too
insecure and Win 2000 is much more stable
