I agree with Derrick: allowing OpenEXR on Commons would also be nice, but it's

OpenEXR is nice, but it was designed by ILM primarily for digital rendering.

AFAIK, neither PNG nor (ordinary) TIFF can store undemosaiced, high-bit-depth
raw sensor data. That's the point of using the DNG format on Commons: saving

Oops, excuse my naivity. DNG files are TIFF files, but with additional
DNG-specific tags; they can be identified by the presence of a DNGVersion tag.
