It's not a code issue, it's a data issue. There's no magic checksum like credit card number.
Postal/zipcode databases can be quite expensive. I spent hours searching and managed to get:

Warning -- Canada have 700,000 + codes.
Canada Post (www.canadapost.ca) has a monthly subscription service available. I drilled down through the Business Products section to this page:
http://www.canadapost.ca/business/offerings/address_management/can/other_data-e.asp
where it provides more information. I think that Radio Shack is
Check with the USPS about their National Change of Address (NCOA) database
for address validation. They also supply databases of just zip codes with
city, county, and states. Some are free and some have subscription fees.

A company called Global Data sells a CD with Zip Codes, State, City, FIPS
Code (a combination City/County code) and Longitude and Latitude for
GeoCoding.
