Hi Mike,
you are confusing branches with versions and tags. A v1.8 branch would
only be created when v1.8 needs to diverge from the main line, that is a
long way in the future

it is not "tagged", the version is set to 1.7.1-devel which is correct
until a serious enough defect is found in the 1.7.0
