My version 1.4.1 xastir has been up & running as a weather station for years -
with occasional failures. A week ago it crashed (disk full from
xsession-errors log of > 1 Gigabyte). After cleanup and restart, no weather
data is transmitted.
Weather data is viewable on xastir, and correct. I
For my weather stations, I've found that mounting the temperature sensor
somewhat below mid way up a 2 meter or so long, vertically mounted section
of 2 inch PVC pipe, painted silver or foiled - except for the top 5 inches.
Darken the top 5-inch section to create some small thermal siphon effects.
There's a gapping hole in my DRG coverage where this particular GeoTIFF
fails to display - I could use some help understanding why...
The gdalinfo dump looks to me to be very much like other DRG's around it -
Driver: GTiff/GeoTIFF

There seems to be a nice selection of up-to-date DRG's availiable in '.sid'
format for my area of the country. (

There's a utility for decoding .sid files to GeoTiff format offered at -

Hmmm... I don't think it is really feasable to install xastir and maps
WITHOUT
a fair internet connection - I have over two gigabytes invested in xastir

Good points - all three of them. I agree with your conclusions.
I had not seen the fledgling wiki on www.xastir.org - it's a good start!
Overview, and also linkage to all those diverse elements (for example "What
is a DRG?")
that tie to xastir don't currently have a
What are folks feelings about an xastir entry in wikipedia?
It could wind up being a nice way to compile all the needed information
related to xastir, including map information, where-to-get dependent parts,
etc.

My newly installed Debian is giving the error:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
...for xastir and also for gv.
I suspect that the X11 interface just isn't there - I think kdm branched off
a bit ago. Anyone got a clue for me?
Thanks!

Thanks for all the... interesting input!!
It's clear that I need at least five new boxes to try out the various
possibilities :0
Now: another question - since true serial ports are scarce, are
USB-to-serial converters the way to go??

My xastir station is showing it's age - hardware-wise. Since I'm going to
build a new computer, I'm wondering if anyone has any strong opinions about
which flavor of Linux fits xastir best... I've used Fedora (really full
RedHat) and Debian for my prior stations.
