By the way what is the difference between an object and an item?
Items are basically objects that don't include a timestamp in the packet
format. Objects are better supported in APRS software than items are, so
it's safer to always use objects instead of items. I understand
That is a very large assumption.
The big question is why do the gateway stations that show up on Xastir
not have there own switch to show or not show? Or at least let us set
them up with an tactical call, why was that disable in the first place?
Thanks... tomorrow will tell

I'd have to look at Xastir in-memory
Correct, objects currently can not have tactical calls ... too bad,
something to work on.
Also; here are some notes about creating objects in the ~/.xastir/
config/object.log

Suppose I want to create an object for all the local hospitals in our
area for a SET we have this weekend. Is there a way to create a file,
in advance, and just activate it when needed? Similar maybe to the way
we can create a file for tactical calls?

I would want them to be transmitted over RF. What would be the format
if I wanted to use a text editor to set them up, with about 10 to do
that would take much less time than one at a time inside of Xastir.

More specifically Curt what I would like to do is this.
I want only tactical calls to show up and I want whatever objects I
have created to show up.
Since I can not assign tactical calls to objects or even in some cases
items like packet gateways, I have to find another way for them to

Set up ONE in Xastir first, making sure that
I'll do this sounds like fun.
Thanks.

The best way to handle this is run your APRS stations on a frequency
other than 144.39. This assumes you don't need, or can replace, all
the digipeaters and other infrastructure on 144.39.

Yep, looks like upgrading lesstif did the trick, can't get it to crash
anymore.
I was using lesstif 0.93.95, upgraded to 0.95

Any idea where to look in the source for the incoming object recording

Well, if you hack out that feature you're likely to disable
reception of anybody's objects or items, and unlikely to see
