Like many users, I rely upon being able to switch my laptop's display from
the LCD to an external monitor by toggling fn-F7. Some i855 users have
reported (to this list) getting a 50 pixel vertical offset of the output
to CRT, others getting no output at all. I have reproduced both
behaviors,

Hi,
I had just started my linux machine and i faced this problem.
GUI login screen is not coming and after booting blank screen comes with flickering and later displaying message unable to start XServer. and when i disable gdm in the console screen it displays.

I have a weird error using my Xfree86 server
If I launch xinit the server start for a very little time (I see
the X cursor for one second) and exit saying
waiting X server to shut down.
If I launch X the screen goes in graphic mode and the X cursor appear and the
mouse works fine.
What do I need
Is i810/830 driver 'now' compatible with XFREE86
WHAT am I doing ??? Thanks in advance!

I solved this creating the /var/lib/xkb directory
mkdir /var/lib/xkb
Now the (last ?) probem is that the Xsrver

solved this problem.
Now I can run xset -q and other programs.
I get back error unable to open disp

helas, this line does not work for the Philips 230W5 in DVI mode
(it does work in Analog mode, but it's less sharp than the digital mode)
In the mean time, I figured out that the max Analog dot pixel rate is
205 MHz and the max Digital dot pixel rate is 160 Mhz (via EDID).
