What about having a very small, 'always on top', background-colour,
transparent cursor window in the corner, and (periodically?) set the mouse
coords to it..?

I think the only way to not have to make 'screen shots' is to hang something
off the video-out of the machine to record it high quality - ie, digital video

back to the computer later.

There doesn't seem to be any info out there on the output format of an FB
dump, apart from people saving the files with a .raw extension. Maybe do
this and try it in gimp?

I'm having issues getting to the documentation for this (linux-fbdev.org) - I
think maybe my firewall here at work hasn't been patched for ECN - but could
it be done with "use fbdev" option and the fbset util?
One piece of doc I can get to at the mo:

How about a small wrapper program which can setuid to the currently logged on

Hi Wilson,
Look at the manual page for XF86Config (not xf86config!)
Play with your xf86config.new file, start X with
"startx -- -xf86config ./xf86config.new"
Once you're happy with it, copy it to the config directory:
cp xf86config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
'startx' to check all is well

Hi,
I've had this problem a couple of times on a particular machine, both times
after I'd had to clean it up because /tmp had got full (Don't ask - I work in
a QA lab ;) )
xfs wont stay up when started with the standard -nodaemon -droppriv flags. It
is fine if started and left in foreground.
Looks like it can't connect to your font server. I've had a similar problem
recently myself with xfs not wanting to stay running. This has been after
/tmp gets full, though I clear it out and xfs still wont stay up: Check this
list in case anyone can help, as I posted a question yesterday on t
By Hummingbird, you mean 'Reflections', ie an Xserver on a PC?
Its important to remember that the bit that displays everything, even though
its the remote end that you're sitting at, is the _server_. The machine
hosting the xterm/openoffice/gnome session and sending it to you is the
_client_.

Have you tried googling for the serial number? That can be quite usefull.

Sorry, obviously I meant the model number from the back, not any personal
serial number it had!

Just had a quick google for "syncmaster 7g" (with the quotes) came up with
these two:
http://www.driversearch.com/forums/monitor/1970.html
http://www1.vobis.de/bbs/support/brett50/samlinux.cfg
The first shows one set of values for v&h sync, the second is a full
xf86config file with all sorts of
Sorry, ignore this post - use the 'allowmouseopenfail' in the 'serverflags'
section, like Craig suggested :0)

I don't think I understand the question...Are you asking if the card works
with win95 or with linux? Which drivers are you talking about? What have you
tried so far? If it doesn't work, do you have logfiles?
I assume, as this is the xfree86 list, you must be asking if this card is

I think you might have a few problems running X without a mouse!
If you really want to do this, you could probably do something like:
1. Run GPM with "gpm -m /dev/null -R raw"
-GPM will become a repeater, creating a mouse device "/dev/gpmdata", although
not converting the data (='raw')
2. Spec
Hopefully other people can be a lot more help than me, but for the moment you
could try commenting out the refresh rates in the 'screen' section. The
server will use a safe default, which wont be a fantastic rate, but at least
you might be able to see something.

To make it always boot in runlevel 3 (non-graphical mode) instead of your
current runlevel 5, edit the file '/etc/inittab' -You'll find an entry with
'initdefault' on the end. Change the 5 to a 3 and save.
You don't need to reboot at

Hello chaps,
Apologies for leaving it so long before following this up - I followed your
advice below, Måns, but unfortunately I couldn't spot anything particularly
wierd in the X or Kernel logs.
However, I've just been reading the Framebuffer Howto at Ibiblio, which states

It's hard to tell from your screenshot, but it might simply be that your
virtual res is too big for your actual res.
ie, if you've a virtual res of 1200x1024 and a physical res of 800x600, you'll
only get part of the screen at a time.
Does your screen scroll around with the mouse?

No idea why installing MySQL etc would do anything with your X config file!

Your font server isn't running. Start it with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start'
and try again.
If this doesn't work, check back in the xfree86.org list archives for info on
how to set manual font paths. As you're probably not interested in serving
fonts to other machines, I think you'll find it a l
