I'm having issues getting to the documentation for this (linux-fbdev.org) - I 
think maybe my firewall here at work hasn't been patched for ECN - but could 
it be done with "use fbdev" option and the fbset util?

One piece of doc I can get to at the mo: 
http://i810fb.sourceforge.net/howto/x411.html

seems to suggest that you can change modes on the fly, although this is aimed 
at virtual consoles, not X...
