Have you tried xvidtune?
When you're in X, you can run xvidtune which will adjust the mode and
should let you get things right for your monitor. You'll then need to
record those values and stick them in your XF86Config file in a section
such as:
Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"

I have been wrestling with this problem for the last
week. I searched for answers in various databases and
FAQs. I tried entering different values into the
config tools and all I wound up doing was to break the
Xfree server. So now maybe I can get some answers
here?
