yes and no
yes, it's slower than just calling a sub part of an existing process (eg
calling a routine in a loaded DLL)
but a well written app is not too slow to launch. (unlike many large GUI
programs like MS Word)

tested this with xmail since I have a very low volume server but it should

but what is about the behaviour of xmail? might it be confused by special
characters when it parses the filter file, or if syntax is not correctly?

formatted filter file in the filters/ dir ?
we had a .tab with some special characters like "\" in the .tab file and
xmail "forgot" to deliver some emails or delivered them as like as that:

find attached a message I just received from the list.
It displayed as plain/text in my email-client (netscape mail).
Outlook behaves exactly in the same way. I discovered the same
problem earlier today with mails generated by some perl-scripts.
When I removed the header MIME-Version: 1

I recently asked this - you'd need to write a generic filter that trapped
on a FROM domain, and acted accordingly, which I've now done. I'd really
like a way of filtering based on from domain, since it would be much
quicker for Xmail to check for a source.com.tab filter then kick off copies
