If the server is being started up without any other clients connected to it when 'xvinfo' is run, it would explain both the crash and restart behaviour and the ScreenInit messages appearing twice. It's normal for the X server to restart after the last client connected to it exits. I'm not

Mark, I just verified that xvinfo does in fact work correctly on the 815. (I had never used that command, but I've used many Xv applications) In fact my personal desktop at home is an i815 with a Brooktree, and I have had no stability issues whatsoever. Can you provide some information about

Sorry for the duplicate post folks - that last one didn't quite make sense. What I meant to say is that the Xserver crashes and restarts whenever I issue the xvinfo command or otherwise query the Xv extension. It does display some information before dying - it seems to make it through the
