I have been playing with the anti-aliasing settings in
Settings->Appearance->Fonts but they don't appear to be doing anything
visible at all.
I'm sure some few versions ago when I played with these settings I
could see the effects of changes.

Have you stopped and restarted Firefox? When you update it can't
update a copy that you are actually running.
It's also worth rebooting the system, I found this sorted out crashing

get it until the first 'increment' of 18.04 arrives (i.e.
18.04.1). This is so that any minor problems that appear immediately
after the release of 18.04 won't get into your LTS based system.
I think 18.04.1 is due in July.
