In general, this is true. For root pools, we're constrained to what BIOSes
support, and most do not support EFI labels.

I seem to be in that very situation right now. Trying to mirror the rpool on my
new SuperMicro X7SBA mobo, I have two 320GB SATA-disks. No matter what I do I
seem to get the EFI label complaint
I installed the system on the first disk and tried to mirror it to the second:
