[Zope] Simple security question

I'm making some changes to an existing Zope setup. The original author has moved on, and I don't have previous experience with Zope: so the setup is relatively well-designed, but I don't really know the low-level basics well. It's some version of Zope 2 (I'm not sure how to get exact version

yellow, I retrive the data using a Z MySQL Database Connection and the corresponding Z SQL Method. Everything works fine but the only way to get the utf-8 data is using "SET NAMES 'utf-8'" before the select statement. I wonder what is wrong... Is it possible to centralize this utf-8 setting in 1
