New and Notesworthy: January 2005

This month's updates feature a new version of Control! from DYS Analytics, Inc., an e-mail archive tool from Avalon Business Systems and much more!

Services to speed adoption of IBM Workplace

Trilog Group, Inc., the Woburn, Mass., creator of the FlowBuilder J2EE rapid development framework for Domino developers, has announced a series of products to help Notes and Domino developers leverage IBM Workplace for next-generation collaborative applications.

The firm's advisory services will help enterprise customers re-engineer their existing Domino solutions so they can be integrated with the IBM Workplace platform. In the area of training, Trilog now offers a four-day IBM Workplace Designer Boot Camp for Domino developers. The training starts with an introduction to J2EE, XML and database management issues rarely encountered in the Domino environment, and recasts Domino development concepts and constructs into their IBM Workplace Designer equivalents.

Trilog claims its new custom IBM Workplace development services can augment the functionality of IBM Workplace Designer by leveraging the skills of Trilog's developers as well as the company's tools, templates and add-on components.

The first two products in Trilog's new series of ready-to-run workplaces are Project Management Workplace and Expense Management Workplace. The first, an out-of-the-box solution that can be integrated with Microsoft Project, implements collaborative capabilities essential to distributed and outsourced development projects. Expense Management Workplace is a pre-built solution template for controlling reimbursable travel, entertainment and out-of-pocket expenses across the organization.

Application performance management package aimed at small businesses

Small companies often have networks and deployments that are just as challenging to understand, maintain and keep efficient as those of larger organizations, but often must make do with fewer IT resources. That is why Wellesley, Mass.-based DYS Analytics, Inc. is targeting businesses with fewer than 5000 users with a new version of its Control! application performance management product.

Control! Standard Edition (SE) provides monitoring, analysis, alerting and reporting capabilities for IBM Lotus Domino, IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing and IBM Workplace Team Collaboration (formerly QuickPlace). With Control! SE, companies with up to 5,000 users can gain an organization-wide view of applications that support detailed analysis for fast troubleshooting and optimization.

With Control! SE, a smaller IT department can identify wasteful user behaviors, adjust replication schedules to save bandwidth and balance server loads. The software also monitors network activity, including mail volumes, senders and recipients, to help IT improve performance of collaboration services. To tighten security and compliance, the software provides alerts of suspect conditions and user activity while also providing audit trails to quickly identify potential abuse or misuse.

Control! SE includes an embedded database for deployment and leverages the Windows IIS Web server to display individualized Web portal views. The product runs entirely on a single Windows platform that performs the analysis; an additional component, the IFM task, is installed on one Domino server that collects data from each managed server. The software can be licensed on either a server or named user basis.

E-mail archive tool aims to reduce load on server

ReduceMail Pro Archive, a mail management utility for use with Lotus Notes and Domino mail systems, now offers all-in-the-mailfile access to archived mail. This feature gives Notes administrators storage management capabilities while minimally affecting users, according to the vendor, New York City-based Avalon Business Systems.

By allowing a Notes administrator to archive e-mail, this all-in-the-mailfile approach aims to reduce server load and minimize back-up times. Users have access to archived mail through the Lotus Notes client, the iNotes client and the WebMail client.

All mail is contained and managed through one folder structure. From the Notes client, all mail, archived or not, can be searched through one search page. In addition, all responses are stored in one place -- the mailfile.

BlackBerry lets you take a conference call

The latest BlackBerry product from Waterloo, Ontario-based Research in Motion combines phone, e-mail, messaging and browsing capabilities with a keyboard and a color screen. The BlackBerry 7100x is aimed at mobile professionals who prefer the look and feel of a phone but want to extend the use of their handset to include e-mail, Web browsing and messaging services.

The 7100x incorporates a speakerphone for conference calls, Bluetooth support for wireless headsets and car-kits and a quad-band radio for international roaming. The 120g device has a battery life of more than four hours talk time and eight days standby. It offers 32MB flash memory and 4MB SRAM. BlackBerry Internet service allows users to integrate their new BlackBerry handset with up to ten business or personal Internet-based e-mail accounts (including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino) without the need for a special server or IT support. For corporate users, the 7100x can connect to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, supporting secure, wireless e-mail, calendar appointments and other corporate data.

Wireless video recorder; virtual room for consulting firms

The Presto! Wireless Video Recorder from Fremont, Calif.-based NewSoft, Inc. enables video senders to broadcast to one or many embedded hardware or software video receivers, so that users can view video content on another television or display, or edit it on a computer. . . .InSys Consulting, in Rochelle Park, NJ, has launched K-Lib, a Web-based knowledge repository for consulting firms whose intellectual capital is "distributed" (i.e., it is in the heads of its employees, most of whom work in different locations for different clients). This "virtual room," designed using Lotus Domino, allows for a set of hyperlinked documents that give technical consultants one view of the content, sales staff another and managers a third.
